🐻 Built By the Mat

The fall season is over and the winter season has officially arrived, bringing with it a fresh wave of energy, excitement, and new athletic opportunities. There are many different sports to choose from during this time of year, but wrestling stands out as one of the toughest and most demanding. It requires strength, speed, discipline, strategy, and mental toughness—qualities that define the Norwalk wrestling program. Lets give some praise to last years season, Norwalk had a strong year, especially on the girls’ side. Three outstanding athletes—Lina Rodriguez, Rylee Donahue, and Jeily Ecuada won the state tournament, showcasing their incredible dedication and skill . Their performances helped Norwalk secure second place in the CIAC Girls State Championship, proving themselves to be a dominant force against all opponents. The boys have also had a great success in past seasons  Their hard work set a high standard for the wrestlers who follow in their footsteps.  Norwalk High School boys’ wrestling is an active program led by Coach Vado , sending multiple wrestlers to states and producing individual champions like Tyler Harper in 2024. They compete in the CIAC and are known for strong team performances, with recent district wins and state qualifications.

This year, however, the team looks different. It’s a younger group, filled with newcomers who are just beginning their wrestling journeys. Many of them are stepping onto the mat for the very first time this season, learning the basic fundamentals stances, takedowns, escapes, pinning combinations, and the discipline required to keep pushing even when things get tough. Wrestling is a sport unlike any other  it is one-on-one, mentally intense, and physically exhausting. Every match tests not only strength but also technique and heart. New wrestlers quickly discover that success comes from constant practice, repetition, and the willingness to push beyond their comfort zones.

Leading this young but motivated team is Coach Vado, who has been pushing the athletes to become not only great wrestlers but also agile, conditioned, and mentally strong competitors. While he has guided many teams to victory in the past, Coach Vado’s focus this season is on growth and development. Wins are great, he says, but seeing his athletes improve, learn, and overcome challenges matters even more especially for such a youthful team with so much potential. At each practice, the wrestlers give one hundred and ten percent. For the school, practice may end at 4:30, but for the athletes, the effort does not stop there. Many of them stay late to drill extra moves, lift weights, or run to increase endurance. Newcomers especially put in extra time, determined to catch up to experienced teammates and prove themselves. Whether they are hitting the gym, taking a jog, or reviewing techniques at home, each wrestler is committed to reaching greater heights.

Even though the team is young, their determination is strong. They bring energy, eagerness, and a willingness to learn—qualities that make them grow quickly and bond as a team. With returning champions setting the example and newcomers working hard to rise, Norwalk enters this winter season with confidence and excitement. Under Coach Vado’s guidance and with the team’s relentless work ethic, this promises to be a season filled with growth, improvement, and unforgettable moments on the mat.
