NorMac’s Alyssa Jimenez creates history as the only girl to make the boys ice hockey roster. Alyssa says, “As a female playing in a boy’s sport, I do not get the nicest comments on the ice. The worst comments always motivate me to become better than anyone who’s ever doubted me.”

Sophomore at Brien McMahon, Alyssa Jimenez started playing hockey four years ago with inspiration from her older brother and teammate, Bryce Jimenez. Talking more with this young star, we’ve learned that family is a huge part of her life. Alyssa’s six siblings are very important to her as well as her dad who is a key figure in her life who pushes her to stay strong and be the best she can be. As for right now, her little brother recently started playing and her sisters skate so we have yet to see if the hockey tradition continues through the family.

Not only has Alyssa discovered a strong passion for the sport, but she’s made life long friendships along the way. When asked three words to describe her, Alyssa’s teammates immediately said tough, brave, and outgoing. “Nothing stops her and she’ll go up against anyone.” “She always has a positive mindset and looks at the bright side in every situation.” “She’s not afraid to take a hit and get right back up.” Overall, the boys enjoy having her on the team and welcome her as one of them. Alyssa describes her point of view of walking into the locker room as “a bunch of high school kids at a frat party.” When talking about being the only girl she says, “the good thing is definitely the respect I’ve earned from all of them and just in general having people there who are just ready to push me.”

As a fresh new player of only a few years, Alyssa’s goal is to get better and improve her game even more in the future. History is in the making for this fearless athlete.

As a female playing in a boys sport, I do not get the nicest comments on the ice. The worst comments always motivate to become better than anyone who’s ever doubted me.
