Billie Eilish is an icon of this generation. Her style of music is different, it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Her green hair, the baggy clothes, Billie Eilish stands out from any typical eighteen year old teenager. Her single that dropped on November 12th, Therefore I Am, is a lot like Billie herself; not like anything we’ve ever seen before. 

Billie Eilish’s baggy clothes style is what makes her unique, and her message has always been the same. She wears baggy clothes that refrain from hugging her figure so that no one can shame her body. She pulls off the style so confidently, just so that no one can have the satisfaction of bringing her down. However, more recently she was caught in public wearing a more comfortable outfit that hugged her figure. Just as she expected, the internet went wild body shaming every aspect of her physique. The fact that Therefore I am released so quickly after is what makes the song and it’s message so strong. 

The Therefore I Am music video is produced by Billie Eilish herself. She runs through a completely deserted mall, through the food court hopping over counters stealing everything in her sight that looks appetizing. She runs through the mall carelessly and free, laughing and eating pretzels, fries, doughnuts, and lemonade as the song plays. The line “So go have fun, I really couldn’t care less” is repetitively heard throughout the song – a hint to body-shamers that she doesn’t care one bit about what they think of her. She knows that these trolls have fun insulting her appearance on the web, but Billie Eilish is just living her life careless. Another part of the song she says “‘Cause I hate to find articles, articles, articles, I’d rather you remain unremarkable.” This line is a reference to the body-shamers either more recently who insulted her body when she wore tighter clothes, or the trolls who shame the fact that she wears baggy clothes at all. Either way, this line is Billie saying that she would like the haters to not remark on her appearance, and leave her alone. 

This song is overall one of Billie Eilish’s most powerful songs. As she eats anything she wants as she runs through the mall singing about how she couldn’t care less what anyone says, it just makes her audience proud. This song was her way of showing the immature bullies of the internet that no matter what they say, she’s still going to live her life the way she wants, and that is why she is such an iconic woman of our generation. She’s independent, and Therefore I Am is yet another way of her reminding the world that she’s not going to cry and fix herself for anyone, she’s Billie Eilish.
