With the Fall Sports Season starting up, the Girl’s Swim and Dive team is looking for success. The team is looking to have a winning season for the first time in a few years. They have a combined four wins in the past three seasons with going 3-5 in 2017. The team is looking to bounce back from last season after going 1-4 and 0-4 the previous year. They have a strong roster with variety in all grades and strong senior presence. They kick the season off against Wilton on Friday, October 2nd at the Wilton YMCA.
The roster looks very different this year, with a total of nine new freshmen joining the squad. The returning swimmers this year include Alejandra Roldan, Morgan Saunders, and Sofia Cuevas and Allie Pereira are the returning divers. They will need to set an example for all the new freshmen, swimmers and divers to have a strong season.
The team has high expectations this season with the roster that they have. When asked about them, Coach Pam Raila said, “Our expectations are simple.. stay safe and healthy, follow protocols so the season can last as long as possible, work hard and improve in personal best times, have fun.” The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how everything works and looks across the world and the swim season is no different. Simple things like everyone staying 6 feet away during the national anthem, potentially having to do meets virtually – this season is astronomically different than any other. “The Pandemic has changed many things but we will not let that keep us down. Whatever practice time we have we will make the most of it,” Coach Raila said in response to how the virus has changed practice time.
The swim team has been practicing for a while now and they are ready to compete against other schools. Coach Raila was asked if there have been any surprises in practice and how the team has been doing. “The whole team has surprised me. The swimmers are coming to practice everyday ready to work hard. They have a positive attitude and are excited to be competing. I believe the team finds success every day we have practice. The ultimate goal is to make it through the entire season.” The team is excited to compete and find success and hope to make Norwalk High proud.
