The upcoming wrestling season at Norwalk High feels different, mostly because Joey Bell is finally back. Joey has wrestled since freshman year, earning a reputation for hard work, leadership, and determination. Everyone expected him to dominate last season until a bad wrist injury playing football occured. This injury caused him to miss his entire junior season and required surgery.
That year away changed him. Joey stayed involved, helping younger wrestlers, running drills, and supporting his team even when he couldn’t compete. He often reminded himself, “The wrist took me off the mat, but it didn’t take me out of the team.” Still, the frustration was real. When talking to a teammate one day, he admitted, “Watching everyone compete while I couldn’t… that was the hardest part.”
Now, as the new season approaches, Joey stands in the wrestling room as a senior captain, ready to lead. He’s grateful to get to be able to wrestle his senior year with his brothers.
Every practice is a chance to prove that he’s stronger than the setback that sidelined him. He pushes through conditioning, drills, and live wrestling with a steady focus. When someone asks whether he’s nervous about returning to competition, Joey simply replies,
“I waited a whole year for this. I’m not wasting a single chance.”
Joey didn’t just grow into a role he earned it. From the first day of freshman year, he knew wrestling demanded more than strength. It demanded discipline, sacrifice, and heart. Over time, he became the one pushing teammates during conditioning, checking in after tough losses, and reminding everyone why they show up to get better.
Joey is now looking better than ever come watch him wrestle in the Norwalk High School gym.
