Candlelight: What Is It?
Candlelight is an annual tradition here at Norwalk Highschool. Every year, students and staff from the choir, band, orchestra, music, and art departments come together to create a live performance for the community. But not enough people realize the depth of Candlelight and its true significance to our community. With the 93rd Candlelight approaching soon, it’s best if we reflect back and evaluate Candlelight from a retrospective lens.
History of Candlelight
The tradition of Candlelight started in 1937 as simple songs sung by the choir and music performed by the band. Over time, Candlelight has evolved to a full stage production including dancing, solo performances, and skits by new groups in the Norwalk community. In 2022, the Jazz band made their first solo debut as a special part of the show.
Ever since Candlelight began in 1937, Norwalk Highschool has been doing it every year since. The tradition only paused during World War II due to blackout regulations, where all lights had to be turned off after dark. Once the war was over, Candlelight resumed for the next 75 years until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The concerts weren’t shut down, but had heavy social distancing in place, where the band couldn’t perform. In 2022, the restrictions were lifted and Candlelight was allowed to fully perform again.
In 2025, Candlelight’s 93rd performance happens right before Christmas break in mid-December. Even through the hardships of war and pandemics, Candlelight endures as an integral part of Norwalk’s rich culture.
What Does Candlelight Mean to Norwalk?
Candlelight is a tradition deeply rooted in the soul of Norwalk High. It’s a time where the creative departments of the school come together and create something truly unique to our region. Candlelight is a symbol of the persistence of Norwalk. Candlelight isn’t only a symbol of Norwalk culture–it’s a opportunity for the band to grow closer as a community. Every year, the band works rigorously for this performance. We hope that this year, all of their hard work pays off with an extraordinary performance.
