With the Boys Swim season just starting, everyone is looking forward to repeating the same success from the last few years, especially since most of their star players will be playing their final season and will be going to college. Boys Swim Captain Issac Zapata is really looking forward to this season and is not only trying to make this his best season, but making the most memories out of this season and winning a championship with all his friends. Before Issac first joined the Swimming team, he had no experience at all and didn’t know how to swim, but he really wanted to learn how to swim, so he decided to give it a chance and little did he know he would learn to swim in no time. Every day he was with Coach Minnonci, and he was teaching him how to swim and, after a while, he made the team and was already competing in swim meets. Issac decided to keep swimming because he said “When you shave off time from your best, it’s what made me keep going, so it gave me a goal to set my eyes on.” He wanted to give all his credit to Coach Minnonci because without him he wouldn’t be the person he is right now and any of this wouldn’t be possible.
When he was competing in his first ever Medley relay, it created his favorite memory of being in the team, because it was his first ever event in his first meet, and he just loves how competitive it is and how it gets the entire team hyped up. The Medley relay is also the reason he’s made all his friends on the team. He said his teammates are part of the reasons he’s stayed on the team and love the sport. Whenever you are not in your place and not feeling well, your teammates are also there to make you feel better and keep your head up. Especially when he was swimming the long distance swims (200 and 500), it was always very challenging, so his teammates always made sure to check on him after every race and make sure that he made good at go.
As of right now, Isaac is still unsure whether or not if he is going to continue his swimming career in college but one thing he is sure of is that he would love to be a coach in the future and teach kids how to swim. He would love to coach kids that have no idea how to swim because he wants to show them that he was once them and the only things you have to do when swimming is practice consistently and always have a great mindset with a lot of confidence whenever you’re swimming. This is what he’s been doing ever since he started and it’s what made him become a captain of the swim team so it will defiantly help teach these kids. If you would like to attend and watch the boys swimming team, here is their upcoming schedule. Make sure to attend their first game of the season on January 8, 2025 as they go against Trumbull High School!
