Media Day for high school athletes is not the norm. Many high school athletes view it as a collegiate level only opportunity for exposure and excitement for the sport or program. Media Day is used to give equal recognition to all sports, not favoring any, and helps promote both the team as a whole and the athletes themselves. “Swim is usually pushed to the side and not covered as much so being able to participate in media day was super exciting. I loved the way the pictures came out, especially the colored photos!” – Katie Brennan
Because we are both athletes we are normally on the other side of the camera. However, taking the Sports Media and Communication’s course at Norwalk High has allowed us to experience the photographers perspective and behind-the-scenes work for ourselves. We took this as an opportunity to cover the NorMac Girls Swim and Dive team through a media day.
The process of Media Day for the NorMac girls consists of first setting up the studio and gathering all the materials; a white board, dry erase markers, a camera, camera battery, SD card, and microphone set. Following these steps we began to start prepping to take pictures. Each individual was asked to write their name on the white board for identification purposes, take a picture in their t-shirt, in their swim suit, and another doing a fun pose. After taking these pictures with the white backdrop, we experimented with colored lights.
Captain, Christine Scully said “media day was really fun. We had tons of options with the different colored lights and I liked how we had to opportunity to take group pictures with our teammates. It’s kind of awkward at first, everyone’s staring at you but, Rylee and Kaelyn were super helpful throughout the whole process.”
