Recently, another Bear on the Norwalk High Wrestling team reached a goal many strive for: 100 wins. Over the years, he has accomplished plenty, placing 3rd at FCIAC every year, as well as 3rd at LL twice, he has placed and won at many regular season tournaments. During his senior year so far, he has won the Ludlowe Invitational at 138 and placed 6th at the Greater Hartford Open, with a record currently of 30-7, and is ranked #5 in the state as he enters the postseason begins with FCIAC on the 14th of February. He also proves himself on and off the mat by being a part of the P-Tech program at Norwalk High.
Senior Captain Ryan Laing has exceeded expectations during his time with the team. Starting his run freshman year at 106, placing 3rd at FCIAC, and just coming up short of placing at LL. Continuing strong into his sophomore year, Ryan placed 3rd at FCIAC, also placed 3rd at LL, and finished with a run at the CIAC State Opens. Completing the same accomplishments during his junior year, his run at State Opens was going well but was cut short due to having medically forfeited out of the tournament. Over the years, he has accomplished much during the postseason and achieved 100 regular season wins, not including his postseason wins. Ryan has the goal of wrestling at the next level after he succeeds through the post-season.
Reaching 100 wins during any point in a wrestler’s high school career, college is a big checkpoint for most. With this, not everyone comes close to doing so. Norwalk High has had several wrestlers reach this, and over the past few years, the athletes were, Nick Fatone, Phoenix Gardella, Brendan Gilchrist, Ryan Gilchrist, and others as the years go back.
