The Norwalk Bears Boys Basketball Team took on Brien McMahon in the Norwalk Double-Header. Unfortunately, the Bears suffered a 71-50 loss. Before the game, we sat down with Coach Darrick Eason, to talk about the season and the upcoming game. This is what he had to say:
First, we wanted to know what Coach does before each upcoming game. Coach says the way he prepares for each game is to look at the last, on both sides. He will study film for his Norwalk boys and look at the opponents film to see weaknesses and advantages. He makes sure to check injuries to see if a player may be out, and checks rosters to see what kind of players he will be up against. To get his players ready for each game, Coach Eason runs them through warm-ups like shooting and dribbling. Coach takes the term ‘warm up’ seriously, as he thinks it is important to get sweaty before the game, as that is the state his players will be while playing.
On Friday, the Boys Basketball team will be taking on Brien McMahon at 4:30 PM. School ends at 2:15, so we wanted to know what Coach does between those hours. First, Coach stays to watch over detention from 2:15 to 3:00. The Freshman team practices from 2:30 to 3:30, so after detention, Coach goes to help and watch the freshmen finish up practice. After that, his focus is all on the Varsity team until game time, preparing them for the game through warm ups. Coach said that Norwalk has height over Brien McMahon, and that if they can have more possessions, shot attempts and rebounds. Coach Eason stated, “I have never seen a game where both teams shoot for 100% from the fiel
d…If we can contest their shots and make them one and done, we have a great chance at winning the game.”
To know more about the team, we asked Coach who he thought had stepped up this year as a leader. Coach informed us that he had just promoted Junior Josh Todd to Captain, saying how he has seen his leadership skills grow and come in right when the team needed it the most. Coach was honest when asked what his hopes for what the rest of the season were, telling us how young and new this team is, and how he is hoping for growth. He tells his players every game to just try and go 1-0 that week because that’s all you can do.
