Apostoli Mano and Wyatt Newman are Sophomore Athletes at Norwalk High. They both play Track and Field, but their history together goes much farther then just the sport. Toli and Wyatt met at West Rocks Middle School in 6th grade during the pandemic in 2020. Toli had come from Jefferson Elementary, Wyatt from Cranberry Elementary. They first met in Ms. Lewis’s 6th grade science class. Overtime, between online and in person learning they became best friends. They have traveled through middle school together, and now end up at the same high school.
Wyatt began running track on a club in first grade, and was on and off throughout his elementary and middle school years, but committed to running track by joining the Norwalk High team. Wyatt in the fall also runs for the Cross Country team. The most fun part about track to him would be the races, because he enjoys competing against his peers. Toli on the other hand, is just a rookie. This will be his first year competing for the Track and Field team, as he joins the shot-put team. Toli also plays for the Boys Volleyball Team. He finds the most joy in practice, joking around with friends, but also learning from the upperclassmen about how to throw well.
When asked what was each others favorite memory together, Toli said he would have to pick their Boston Field Trip in 8th Grade. Wyatt argued that it was debatable between that and Natures Classroom in 7th grade, but ultimately the two agreed that the Boston Field Trip was the best. We wanted to know how they would feel switching positions, so we asked who would play better, Toli running track or Wyatt throwing shot-put. They both were confident, with Toli saying he has had experience running before so he could hold his own, while Wyatt said he would be much better at shot-put because he was, “A pretty strong guy.”. Lastly we asked for their hopes for the season. Because of Wyatt’s history with the sport, he has huge goals in qualifying for states. Toli understands that it is just the beginning for him, so he plans on practicing and having fun.
