One day we were in class, supposed to be doing our work when we might’ve been off task. Mr. Pagano and Mr. Seaburg, instead of scolding us, gave us a great idea in doing what we were doing with the NBA, and using it for our hometown school. Today, you will be reading an article that may turn heads, or add confidence to your opinions. With much research and deep questioning from former coaches, spectators, and table workers. We now introduce to you, our All-Time Starting 5: NHS edition!
#1 Calvin Murphy
Kicking off thelist with our first player has got to be the most obvious one! Calvin Murphy isan NBA hall of famer, one all-star selection, and made the all-NBA rookie team in his first year. At Norwalk High School, Murphy was one of the best players in the country, averaging 25.6 as a sophomore, 31.8 as a junior, and then 40.8 as a senior. Murphy was named all-state for the three years he was on varsity and named all-american his junior and senior season. Murphy went on to play Division I basketball at Niagra University where he tallied 2,548 points and even had a 68-point game vs. Syracuse. Murphy went on to play for the Rockets where he has his jersey retired after a 13 year playing career.
#2 Roy Kane, Jr.
With our second pick we might turn some heads, Roy Kane is our second player in our starting 5. Roy Kane is second all-time in points for the city of Norwalk behind our #1, Calvin Murphywith 1,590 career points which goes along with his insane 1,037 career rebounds stat. Roy was 2x all-state his junior and senior year along with being all-FCIAC his sophomore – senior year. Roy Kane Jr. has by far the best stat for Norwalk High which is starting all 4 games against Brien McMahon and beat them all 4 times. Roy went on to play Division II basketball at the University of New Haven. Roy is no doubt a top 5 player in Norwalk high school history, that one’s for you Mr. Nails!
#3 Shawn Maharaj
3rd up on our list is Shawn Maharaj. From 1984-1988 Shawn had 1,143 points which earned him all-FCIAC in his freshman year. Shawn picked up a bunch of offers from the Ivy league but ultimately chose Cornell University to continue his basketball career. Speaking to Coach Darrick Eason of the 2024-25 Norwalk high boys basketball team, coach Eason told us that Shawn Maharaj was exceptional on the court when Eason would watch him play. During Shawn’s senior season, he beat his cross-town rival Brien McMahon and also led Norwalk high to the state chip. Shawn went on to shine at Cornell averaging 11.8 during his 4 years starting at the university.
#4 Keith “Kita” Sellers
Keith Sellers comes in at #4 on our list. Keith, who was said by many to be “the best we’ve ever seen” by faculty who watched him play. Keith had over 1,000 points and was averaging over 25 points a game during his Norwalk High career. Keith was awarded all-FCIAC his senior year and balled out, earning him a scholarship offer from St. Peter’s University. Keith played really well at St. Peter’s averaging 21.4 points during his 4-year collegiate career. Keith was awarded into the Norwalk hall of fame for his outstanding efforts on the court!
#5 Jeff Allen
Coming in at our 5th spot is Jeff Allen. Jeff was the second player in Norwalk high school history to make it to the NBA. Jeff was all-FCIAC and all-state during his years at Norwalk high school. Jeff led the Bears to a 22-5 record and a spot in the 1979 FCIAC championship game. Allen became only the fourth player to be named first team all-state. Jeff went on to play at St. John’s University then transferring to Rutgers’ University for three years before being selected in the third round by the Sacramento Kings. Jeff Allen is beloved on the court by everyone who saw him play, he even makes Scotty Nails top 5 list!
This list was made to highlight members of the Norwalk high basketball team who helped us win games. This list was not made to offend anyone but was only gathered through information we saw from former coaches, current faculty, and record books. We hope you enjoyed this list and if you disagree, come find us because we are always open to a debate. Go Bears!
